A Blueprint for Progress: Bertie County School’s $3.5M Design-Build Modernization Project

With a clear vision for advancing their educational facilities, Bertie County Schools completed a $3.5 million design-build modernization project in partnership with Schneider Electric. The project was a strategic response to the unique indoor air quality challenges posed by the coastal climate in Bertie County, North Carolina. With ESSER funding in hand and amidst a climate of inflation and equipment delays, the district acted swiftly to prioritize the well-being of its students and staff.

Elevating School Infrastructure with Proactive and Efficient Project Implementation

From February 2022 to August 2023, Bertie County Schools undertook a significant infrastructure overhaul. Focused on addressing indoor air quality issues caused by aging HVAC units at Windsor Elementary School and Colerain Elementary School, the project included a complex upgrade to the HVAC systems at both schools. Intentional planning ensured a significant enhancement to the learning environment could take place while causing minimal disruption to the educational process, with work scheduled during school breaks and off-hours.

The full Scope of Work included:

  • Upgrade from 2-Pipe to 4-Pipe HVAC systems at Windsor Elementary School
  • Replacement of all fan coils to ensure reliable and efficient heating and cooling
  • Comprehensive heat pump replacements to bolster system performance
  • Installation of new air handlers in both schools, enhancing air quality and circulation
  • Deployment of advanced building automation systems at both sites for smarter energy management

Empowering Students with Sustainability Education

In conjunction with the modernization efforts, Bertie County Schools celebrated Earth Day 2023 by engaging students in sustainability-focused activities. Windsor Elementary students created upcycled gardens by turning milk cartons into planters for lettuce seeds, learning about plant growth and recycling. Aulander Elementary students explored renewable energy by building solar bugs and ovens for smores. These activities complemented the district’s modernization efforts, fostering a culture of environmental awareness and stewardship among students.

A Celebration of Achievement: Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

The completion of this transformative project was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Windsor Elementary School on September 6th, 2023. The event underscored the district's dedication to creating a conducive learning environment and was commemorated by remarks from Dr. Otis Smallwood, Superintendent of Bertie County Schools, and supported by Schneider Electric's presence.

Setting the Stage for Continued Progress

The successful completion of this $3.5 million project not only addressed immediate infrastructure needs but also set Bertie County Schools on a path for future sustainability and educational projects. The district's proactive approach, with support from Schneider Electric, serves as an exemplary model of commitment to educational excellence and environmental stewardship.
