Moody Air Force Base Awarded 2021 Top Project
Schneider Electric, the leader in energy and sustainability services, today announced that its work with Moody Air Force Base (Moody AFB) received a Top Project of the Year Award in the elite Environment + Energy Leader Awards program. The Moody AFB renewable energy infrastructure project was recognized by judges as a top example of the exemplary work being done today in the fields of energy and environmental management.
The Environment + Energy Leader Awards is a program recognizing excellence in products and services that provide companies with energy and environmental benefits, and in projects implemented by companies that improved environmental or energy management and increased the bottom line. This is the fifth year in a row that a Schneider Electric partnership has been named a Project of the Year.
Through an energy savings performance contract (ESPC) with Schneider Electric, Georgia-based Moody Air Force Base accelerated its resilience plan with a comprehensive energy infrastructure project to modernize 2 million square feet across more than 60 buildings. The project is creating an estimated $700,000 in annual energy savings for the U.S. Defense Department (DoD) for a total of $21 million in utility and operational savings over the course of the 23-year contract. Part of DoD’s broader strategy to achieve mission-critical resilience, the project incorporates renewable energy alternatives that directly offset a portion of the installation’s utility bill and goes towards meeting the Air Force’s Energy Vision to Enhance Mission Assurance Through Energy Assurance.
“We are honored to have our ESPC acknowledged as a Top Project for energy management and sustainability.” says Elizabeth Herrmann, Moody Air Force Base Energy Manager. “This project will have lasting impacts on our energy resilience and environmental impact for years to come. We hope our initiative can inspire other agencies to help address the nation’s broader energy challenges.”
One Environment + Energy Leader Awards judge said of the Moody AFB project: “This is a cost-effective solution that provides a roadmap for longer term savings opportunities. Newer, smarter and more resilient system controls will also improve the overall comfort and environment for airmen while being fiscally responsible to taxpayers.” The judge added, “It is great to see this successful project at a few military bases, and it is repeatable for others.”
“Schneider Electric is proud to be recognized for our work helping Moody Air Force Base achieve their energy and mission resiliency goals,” said Alison Rucker, Schneider Electric. “Building on the success of our federal partnerships with several military bases, the Moody AFB project provides long-term renewable energy infrastructure investments and base improvements while saving taxpayer dollars. We are committed to helping provide innovative, comprehensive solutions for federal agencies to more quickly and cost-effectively modernize facilities, enhance mission readiness and increase their energy resiliency and independence.”
The Moody AFB project features an industrial-sized 2.5 megawatt solar array and panel system, which provides clean electrical power to both offset the base’s utility bill and defer current energy being sourced from nuclear, coal and gas sources. It also features an expanded energy management control system and scheduling to increase visibility into energy usage, new transformers to enhance efficiency and reliability, updated HVAC systems to improve air quality and comfort for airmen and LED lighting systems for both interior and exterior buildings.
“With a very experienced and critical judging panel and a strict set of judging criteria, entrants faced an extremely high bar to qualify for an award in 2021,” added Sarah Roberts, Environment + Energy Leader publisher.
In addition to Moody AFB, Schneider Electric has worked on similar projects with the Fort Huachuca Army installation in Arizona, Naval Base Coronado in California, and Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. In total, Schneider Electric has been awarded 17 federal ESPCs and UESCs (Utility Energy Services Contracts), delivering more than $895 million in infrastructure modernization and energy improvements and services for federal agencies. ESPCs are financial vehicles that help publicly-funded entities make capital improvements over longer payback periods with many long-term benefits, including improved facility efficiency, more comfortable environment, financial management and environmental protection.
