CPHI is a global community that has been at the heart of pharma for over thirty years and their annual awards celebrate companies and individuals that have made an impact on the industry.
November 6, 2023, Louisville, KY – Schneider Electric’s Sustainability Business announced that the company has received the winning nomination on behalf of the Energize program for the sustainability category at the 2023 CPHI Pharma Awards ceremony in Barcelona on October 24.
Representatives from AstraZeneca and GSK, two Energize founding sponsors, Simon Gerrard, Director, Renewables and Cleantech and Jason Wykoff, Senior Renewable Energy & Cleantech Client Development Manager at Schneider Electric stand with PSCI representative to accept the Sustainability Pharma Award.
The Energize program, managed by Schneider Electric in partnership with the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI), brings together 19 global pharmaceutical companies to collaborate on reducing emissions and mitigating the overall environmental impact across the industry by increasing access to renewable electricity. The Energize program was selected as the winner of the CPHI Sustainability award, chosen among 11 other finalists as global companies with high impact sustainability initiatives. CPHI celebrates innovation across the industry with award categories that highlight outstanding individuals and companies that have demonstrated exceptional leadership and impact in the pharmaceutical industry.
The chief procurement officers of the 19 companies sponsoring Energize, which collectively represents ~$713.6 Billion in global annual revenue*, recently wrote in an open letter to their suppliers that the science is clear and the time to act is now, calling on the industry to recognize the direct connection between the health of patients and the health of the planet - and to become a part of the solution through renewable electricity adoption.
In 2021, the World Health Organization stated that climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity. The healthcare industry is responsible for nearly 5% of global emissions. Energize has already announced the formation of its first PPA cohort representing a potential aggregate of 1.35 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity demand in Europe and North America.
“It’s exciting to see the progress of the Energize program since its initial launch in 2021. Energize has shown the power of industry-wide partnership, as suppliers combine electricity purchasing power to go to market as a group to pursue power purchase agreements,” said Dave Rimkus, Director, Supply Chain Renewables at Schneider Electric. “Energize has inspired other leading organizations to join the movement, turning ambition to action through industry-wide supply chain renewable programs including the semiconductor and aerospace and defense industry.”
Schneider Electric’s supply chain renewables initiative has sparked interest in other industries looking to leverage the power of supply chain cohorts, including Catalyze for the semiconductor industry and RENEWAY for the aerospace and defense industry.
